Obligatory Rushdie celebwatch

Salman Rushdie is:
a) in form, sort of back, maybe, maximum ophul...
b) overanalysed, says Amit Chaudhuri, who squeezes a review in somewhere along the line
c) tired of being a celeb
d) playing scrabble (or, as this story from The Guardian suggests, Twister?) with Kylie Minogue (damn. Now the Babu and the Partner both have reasons to hate Salman chacha; one worships Bono, the other leers at Kylie, and it's kind of galling to know that Rushdie's met both while we haven't met either. PS: Did Kylie make more triple word scores, the partner wants to know.)
e) at the centre of the Satanic Limericks outrage. (Ok, just kidding, it's the Rockall Times having fun.)

As I was holding Shalimar the Fat Clown in my hands, yawning not so infrequently, I realise that the entire book is an overnourished narrative summary. Not a single scene have I been able to spot yet! Tired, I inspect the misty cover, I run my fingers over the embossed letters, and it is touch, touch indeed, the friction or the lack of it, that make me realise that since The Ground Beneath Her Feat Rushdie had opted for glossy covers with his name embossed in fat letters. (I skip The Satanic Verses from this count, since the calligraphy on its cover was a necessary thing.) Looks like the Salmon wants to fight it out with the Wolves and the Kings of the Jungle.

It is very easy to take potshots on a writer. Rushdie takes a couple of years to write a novel and some people dismiss it as a clownish work within days of the novel's publication. The guy is a fabulist and his work should be approached in that manner.
