So I'm standing on my head, staring at this screen...

It works, is all I have to say.
From Matthew Baldwin's 'Tricks of the Trade' article:
Proofreader
If you’re reading too fast, your brain can “correct” typos, preventing you from catching them. That’s why it’s sometimes a good idea to read a page upside-down. It forces you to pay closer attention to individual words out of context, and you can’t race through pages too fast.

My method has been reading backwards. Pretty effective, though one's brain does try and take over and force one to read forward.
Other method, finger at the end of a word, sliding along the line, so you read one word at a time. (: Works better on paper, unless you want a smudged screen. :)
